Don’t Panic, It’s Just a Cycle
Show notes
Finding a clump of hair in the shower drain can trigger instant panic, but true peace of mind comes from understanding the boundary between routine shedding and actual hair loss. If you want to accurately assess your scalp's health, you need to look past the "shampoo day delusion" and decode the biological timeline of your follicles. By the end of this episode, you will understand how the asynchronous human hair cycle naturally sheds up to 200 strands a day, and why less frequent washing loops curly girls into a shocking, cumulative optical illusion under the shower. You will discover how a traumatic life event or a radical diet shift activates a delayed cortisol pathway that triggers shedding months down the line, and learn why excessive physical tension from tight styling permanently depletes your hair follicles' finite lifecycle.
Host Hadnet Tesfai guides you through these deeply emotional scalp dynamics, validating the anxiety of thinning hair while grounding the conversation in clinical data. For this masterclass, she welcomes Leila Berriche, Henkel’s leading scalp scientist, who brings cutting-edge laboratory insights to the raw reality of hair preservation and trichology.
Together, they detangle the complex mechanics behind various forms of alopecia, breaking down the exact hormonal breakdown of testosterone into DHT and comparing classic male-pattern receding to the diffused thinning women face during perimenopause. They explore why late-summer daylight shifts trigger a predictable seasonal shed, clarify the physiological differences between minoxidil's blood-flow stimulation and targeted internal blockers, and deliver a crucial reality check on the long-term microenvironment management, aftercare, and unique structural challenges of curly-hair transplants.

00:00:04: Gossip Girl, the podcast about all things hair.
00:00:14: Hello and welcome back to Gossip Curl!
00:00:16: The podcast of All Things Hair.
00:00:18: my name is Habne Tesfaye.
00:00:20: I am your host And today we're gonna tap into our traumas.
00:00:24: We are going talk about hair loss When too much Is Too Much And here, to talk and guide us through this really complicated and hurtful and painful issue is Henkel's scientist lead when it comes to all things scalp.
00:00:43: Please welcome Leila Berichai-Leila!
00:00:46: Hi!
00:00:47: How are you?
00:00:48: Yeah oh good...and I'm pretty honored be able to talk about these topics today….
00:00:53: ...And listen hair loss is something very painful Yeah, right.
00:00:58: But also
00:01:00: it's
00:01:01: really hard to pin down because we all go through moments where can't... We kind of go like wait is this still okay?
00:01:10: And when you're convinced somethings wrong and then realize oh no actually this alright!
00:01:17: Sometimes we realized too late that have been losing hair more than should've been loosing the ponytail and go like, oh this is sad.
00:01:30: So we're gonna get into it right?
00:01:33: Let's talk about how much is actually normal what can we expect to lose on a regular basis?
00:01:41: And why do we sometimes feel when we wash in shampoo condition that its alot more those days?
00:01:51: I think we can start with the hair follicle cycle, like the hair cycle itself.
00:01:56: because um... The hair follicles which are growing out of the hair fiber have a cycle and that cycle is asynchronous.
00:02:04: Otherwise it would be bald every six years.
00:02:07: so six years is the phase of growth Which we call anagen.
00:02:11: Then you will have the face that we called catagen where the hair fallicle regresses And it's there for about three to four weeks, and then finally you have the telogen phase where so-to say your hair follicle just snapped.
00:02:26: It's snapping until the exogenous phase when the hair will be shed out of the hair follicles while another hair is actually growing up from here.
00:02:36: So this how a normal cycle goes.
00:02:41: And when we are talking about hair shedding, you should see around fifty to hundred hairs shading a day because again, hair follicles are asynchronous.
00:02:52: Sorry!
00:02:55: Which
00:02:55: means that not every hair is in the same stage of its life.
00:03:02: No, and that's quite interesting with human because it is really asynchronous compared to beers for instance right?
00:03:09: They would go during winter just snap.
00:03:12: they will also shed a lot But it's quite different for humans.
00:03:18: Yeah,
00:03:18: so that's why we have some hair falling out while other follicles are kind of still like pushing out the hair and growing it in others or just holding on So you never go fully bald?
00:03:30: Yeah
00:03:31: basically
00:03:31: yeah unless something goes wrong with this system.
00:03:35: right
00:03:35: okay And we're gonna get into that in a second.
00:03:37: so The shampoo day illusion.
00:03:39: what does that mean?
00:03:40: because sometimes You know Especially as curly girls, right?
00:03:45: We don't brush our hair or comb our hair every day.
00:03:49: So come shampoo day I really have to tell myself
00:03:54: Every washday
00:03:56: No this is okay
00:03:57: Yeah Because why?
00:03:59: yeah exactly so As i said normally you should lose between fifty or hundred hairs and when you wash if you do it every two days or something like that, when applying some force with your comb... You'd see some hair shedding.
00:04:16: But then we've cut here and you would wash your hair every five to six days?
00:04:21: And that is then a lot of hairs which were already shedding, but they are kind of stuck in the mass.
00:04:28: So when you shampoo and you start to comb because we're only combing under the shower... With conditioner
00:04:34: on?
00:04:35: Yeah!
00:04:36: When it's wet Then you see a bunch of hair You like.
00:04:42: oh my god am I losing my hair?
00:04:43: But just get adjusted with time.
00:04:46: Just understand That It's normal.
00:04:49: This isn't the hair i lost in one day.
00:04:52: it's actually the hair that I lost since i last combed my hair or rushed my hair which might have been like five six days ago.
00:04:58: Exactly,
00:04:58: It is cumulative shedding that comes out all of a sudden when you shower
00:05:04: but still...it does feel shocking
00:05:09: right?
00:05:11: Yeah sometimes I don't have time to wash my hair every two days so I do it after like five or seven days and i'm like oh my god what is that?
00:05:19: And then, yeah Leila remember you didn't wash your hair for a couple of day.
00:05:24: So its just normal.
00:05:25: but yeah It's quite shocking because You have this huge mass in your comb and you're just like Oh My God am I losing my hair?
00:05:30: Are
00:05:30: you gonna like this you?
00:05:32: Is it still
00:05:33: all there?
00:05:33: Can we go check?
00:05:34: But
00:05:35: when he dries out Then you see the mass thats still there.
00:05:43: Sometimes we shed more.
00:05:46: And that has various reasons, right?
00:05:49: What are the most common reasons for an increase in hair shedding?
00:05:55: There is this thing that we call seasonal shedding and probably most of the listener or one who watching will relate to it.
00:06:07: between August and then September, this is the time where you're going to see an increase in hair shedding.
00:06:14: Yeah And that's scientifically proven That at that time You gonna have more hair shading than usual
00:06:23: August and September.
00:06:24: yeah August or September?
00:06:26: And thats quite known!
00:06:28: And that because there was a switch-in day light happening At The Time And that switch in daylight is also having a bit of impact on hormones.
00:06:38: And hormones are quite important for the hair follicle to cycle, and there's quite an interesting study that's then more about how it fibrates itself and changes.
00:06:49: They showed during summer their hair becomes thicker... ...and rougher.
00:06:57: Interesting!
00:06:58: That's done through a method called tonsite testing.
00:07:03: When you are able to see that through mechanics of hair, That means there is really something biologically has changed.
00:07:11: So should I be able, on a longer strand of hair?
00:07:16: Should i be able if like kind of go across it and its sometimes thinner or sometimes thicker.
00:07:21: Should I feel is the difference so tiny that you can actually only see in special tools?
00:07:29: That's great question because we have specific devices kind of see the tiny changes, but sometimes if you look at your hair like just one hair.
00:07:40: You would say that it's not homogeneous?
00:07:43: Yeah no!
00:07:43: It is
00:07:44: not.
00:07:44: The shape or also thickness... Exactly
00:07:48: so.
00:07:48: that has to do with seasonal change or any kinds of changes
00:07:53: in the follicle.
00:07:54: Any kind of changes could be hormonal, there are seasonal changes and many things can stress?
00:08:02: Is he tired if it has changed and so on?
00:08:05: So yeah, there are like so many things that can impact hair growth.
00:08:10: And the hair in the end Yeah!
00:08:13: We have a seasonal shedding... ...and then you mentioned hormones.
00:08:17: we also have hormonal shedding
00:08:19: right?!
00:08:20: That happens when
00:08:21: That happens, for instance when you are stressed.
00:08:24: if we're talking about daily occurrence.
00:08:27: When your stress is a very long period of time which would be called chronic stress then you have an hormone that's secreted which is cortisol and cortisol has a down pathway where it activates inflammation.
00:08:46: this can also disrupt the hair cycle.
00:08:49: so hair growth Most of the time after a traumatic stressful event or when it's chronic.
00:08:56: three to six months later You'd see that you would have an increase in hair shading.
00:09:01: Wow, so it comes with a delay.
00:09:03: Yeah
00:09:04: Oh doesn't happen instantly?
00:09:05: It comes with
00:09:06: exactly yeah He comes with the delay Because you know I said that um there and a gen phase for the growth phase ranges from Six to seven years And so it takes time for the hair to go from anagen to then the telogen phase and exogen where the hairs shed.
00:09:25: So I would say that in the end, like the shedding of hair takes time but is also a sort of barometer on your health.
00:09:36: when he sheds a lot you should be worried.
00:09:38: Okay
00:09:38: gotcha!
00:09:42: If we were talking about non-stress related hormonal changes, which we're going to get into in a second.
00:09:50: Then I'm like oh yeah that was really hard but um i want to stick to the cortisol level.
00:09:56: so cortisol levels do change or have an impact on shedding?
00:10:02: Yeah right and what about other...like..I don't wanna call them lifestyle related issues but you know stress is one partying, smoking like not living the most healthy lifestyle.
00:10:18: Yeah such as resting for instance.
00:10:21: when we talk about you're talking about smoking and probably things that are a bit detrimental to health And of course it hasn't been shown directly.
00:10:34: he has an impact but would have one I'm guessing.
00:10:38: Talking about sleep and fatigue, we know that during the day you always have this peak of cortisol early in the morning.
00:10:48: And then it lowers down and he picks up again whenever you have lunch or dinner.
00:10:54: Then during evening would have melatonin which is there to make sure all your cells are kind Cleaned, so to say.
00:11:06: And this is a very important process because it's also happening within the hair follicle and if you don't sleep properly for long period of time You're probably gonna see shedding.
00:11:15: That's
00:11:16: crazy.
00:11:17: Yeah
00:11:19: Oh no!
00:11:19: Don't say that
00:11:21: Yeah...you have to sleep.
00:11:22: Kai I need to sleep as well.
00:11:25: I'm telling ya
00:11:26: Oh my god.
00:11:26: So there are no scrolling through social media.
00:11:29: If you wanna have beautiful hairs sleep.
00:11:30: Okay
00:11:31: oh my God.
00:11:33: Okay, all right.
00:11:33: Gotcha!
00:11:34: Yeah but sleep is so great for you it's so healthy.
00:11:36: yeah yes there are loads of things that are happening.
00:11:40: Leila talked to me about the most common types of hair loss Right?
00:11:49: So... The most common type of hairloss You would have Androgenic Allopecia which I'd say and then male pattern hair loss inside and then female pattern hair lost.
00:12:02: You'd have menopause associated hair loss, you would have stress related hair loss or hair shedding And then you also had the postpartum kind of hair loss.
00:12:14: among that you will be sighted as alopecia areata where for instance the hair follicle human privilege is totally disrupted.
00:12:26: I'm not gonna talk about that in detail, but it means the energy phase is going well at all.
00:12:31: It's quite short.
00:12:33: and you also have things like scarring alopecia which are also immune system disruption related.
00:12:42: Okay so let us go through them one by one.
00:12:45: The first thing we mentioned was androgenic hair loss.
00:12:48: What does this mean?
00:12:49: Androgenic hairloss So its mostly present among men.
00:12:55: And this is the whole thing with testosterone.
00:13:00: Testosterone is a male-represented hormone, but it's also present in women.
00:13:05: and what happens?
00:13:06: Testosteron has broken down into dihydrotestosterone.
00:13:11: This molecule goes to the endrogen receptors which are within the nucleus of cells.
00:13:20: The problem is that these receptor I expressed by the center for growth
00:13:25: of hair.
00:13:26: Okay,
00:13:27: and when it goes there the anagen phase gets faster
00:13:31: okay?
00:13:33: And your hair sheds you know faster than usual.
00:13:36: with time they have becomes instead of terminals so very thick.
00:13:41: It becomes very thin.
00:13:43: This is what we call vellus.
00:13:45: and then to a certain extent You're gonna experience some pattern baldness mainly starting from the front here and then you're gonna see this aim shape.
00:13:55: And it's going to diffuse in back of head, end up with a crown.
00:14:00: So that means it starts around here?
00:14:02: Sometimes round here but always moves
00:14:07: its resets like hairline resets.
00:14:11: What is this?
00:14:12: male pattern hair loss that you mentioned?
00:14:15: what's difference?
00:14:17: female pattern hair loss, as you also mentioned.
00:14:21: So the female pattern and loss is quite different.
00:14:23: because first of all when we check into literature there's no direct link that has been done with the Androgen receptors.
00:14:35: The pattern in terms of the loss... You would see that the parting We contain less hair, right?
00:14:44: First it's gonna go thinner and then you're going to see some holes.
00:14:48: And the pattern helos is going to be diffused all around the scalp.
00:14:53: Okay so its not like... You don't go from having this M-shape Then kind of receding hairline.
00:15:01: This isn't what
00:15:04: that is.
00:15:05: It's
00:15:05: more diffuse A thinning all over.
00:15:13: Yeah, exactly it's like a thinning.
00:15:15: I mean in the parting he becomes quite obvious somehow.
00:15:18: but yeah you can see the scalp at some point.
00:15:21: so and its really receding like that.
00:15:25: um... And the hair become more thinner.
00:15:29: for instance if make a ponytail and you have female pattern, hello sorry.
00:15:34: You'd see that the ponytail is less bouncy.
00:15:37: okay yeah there's just
00:15:38: thinner as well.
00:15:39: exactly it's less voluminous.
00:15:42: Okay so this is the thing.
00:15:44: but
00:15:44: how?
00:15:45: This doesn't happen overnight right?
00:15:46: no like a slow process
00:15:48: Exactly.
00:15:49: Yeah It Doesn't Happen Overnight.
00:15:54: just to portray it, all of the male in my family are bald.
00:16:00: And my brother started to lose his hair when he was around sixteen already.
00:16:04: Oh no!
00:16:05: When he hit eighteen It's like having this very wide-end calabalos shape and then at the age of twenty five it was bald.
00:16:17: He had the crown left.
00:16:21: That was quite traumatic for him because I... I used to spend hours and hours, you know in the bathroom styling his hair because he had like curly hair and stuff.
00:16:30: And then suddenly... All
00:16:32: gone?
00:16:33: Yeah!
00:16:33: Oh my god.
00:16:36: within eight nine years.
00:16:38: yeah so we started to lose it when was sixteen and then twenty by twenty-four year old.
00:16:42: all
00:16:43: gone.
00:16:43: that is harsh.
00:16:44: yeah That's really harsh.
00:16:46: but at the same time It was quite expecting it Because they made me family were mostly bald.
00:16:53: So chances is if you have this kind of hair loss in your family, If you look around and look at your aunts or uncles Look at your grandparents Chances it's going to hit as well are there?
00:17:04: Yeah
00:17:04: It fits coming from the mother side.
00:17:07: That quite interesting because I had cousins guys.
00:17:12: Their mom was not from their families.
00:17:16: They got married with my uncle And these guys, they still have the hair and are now twenty-five.
00:17:22: Oh wow!
00:17:23: They actually have a beautiful one.
00:17:26: Your uncle?
00:17:27: He's bald.
00:17:28: so my uncle is bald but then he got married with my aunt who was not from their family.
00:17:36: So it
00:17:37: passed down on his mother side.
00:17:39: I think in the literature also says that
00:17:44: Women, I guess we're responsible.
00:17:46: Sorry about that guys.
00:17:50: Okay so That's it.
00:17:52: It's a slow process.
00:17:54: and then i mean We are gonna go into what you can actually do About right.
00:17:59: but Then there is something You mentioned Where like in my head went like yeah check Yeah, check.
00:18:08: Experience that experience and this is hair loss around postpartum you know?
00:18:17: And then like once I'd say three months hit it starts falling out in
00:18:28: bulk
00:18:31: Horrific, but what we threw that.
00:18:33: What happens there?
00:18:34: Mm-hmm.
00:18:35: So what happens during pregnancy and I think that's quite interesting is that all the hundred hairs are supposed to shed do not They're kind of maintained in this anagen phase so to grow face Which it's kind of no know.
00:18:51: and that has to do with hormone balance.
00:18:53: yeah And when you give birth There is a disbalance in hormones.
00:19:00: I mean, the hormonal environment so to say it's changing right mainly estrogen and also like testosterone.
00:19:07: And what happens?
00:19:09: Is that the hair follicle has these boosts and then all the hair which we're supposed to shed during pregnancy are shedding within three two four months as you said.
00:19:18: oh And they just like.
00:19:20: am i experiencing hellos right now Like you ponytail?
00:19:23: or yeah your ponytail becomes you know, let's bounce here and everything.
00:19:28: And by a year when the child gets their first anniversary... You realize that your hair is back?
00:19:35: Yeah-ish I must say for me!
00:19:40: Back-ish!
00:19:42: It took longer but it did come back.
00:19:47: But i was like oh this is never gonna come back.
00:19:49: Because what you're telling now Is That I lose..I don't loose hair during the nine months of pregnancy, or hardly... Or fewer.
00:20:00: Less hair?
00:20:01: I lose less hair!
00:20:03: The one which were intelligent would shed but the one which are unagent will not shed.
00:20:07: They wouldn't shed exactly.
00:20:08: Intelligent face is again it's a holding on phase right.
00:20:12: yeah they're resting like doing do napping kind of
00:20:14: thing so they fall out But the ones that are growing they don't follow.
00:20:18: Exactly
00:20:19: okay good
00:20:19: and the once our supposed to go through this Catagenin and allergen phase, they're not going
00:20:24: because
00:20:25: that stuck into the growing face.
00:20:26: And usually you'd say oh my hair is like looking so nice, it's thicker during pregnancy... Yeah I look great!
00:20:33: You see?
00:20:34: My hair was like
00:20:36: my curls were bouncy but then
00:20:40: fall comes
00:20:41: hard.
00:20:41: It comes hard for me maybe tell if this kind of normal most significant shedding that I had in postpartum was around my temple area.
00:20:54: It's like, around here the front right?
00:20:57: That was where it really hit me and i remember seeing photos of myself kind of going like oh my god!
00:21:05: I was
00:21:05: bald!!
00:21:06: I really
00:21:06: was
00:21:06: bald!!!
00:21:07: That's how I felt...I wasn't but obviously..but is it....it was around here so is it.....is it around here mostly around the temple and the front of the
00:21:15: face??
00:21:16: Like the face frame that Caroline
00:21:17: goes.
00:21:18: Or is that just where I saw it most?
00:21:21: It's usually the most, because you can be a bit diffused as well.
00:21:25: Because they're not only related to the front right like a lot of over hair follicular around the skull or scalp were already in anagen when we are pregnant and so there also need to shed after pregnancy.
00:21:39: yeah but
00:21:40: this is just... The front is just more noticeable for me.
00:21:43: Yeah
00:21:43: exactly Oh,
00:21:46: yeah.
00:21:46: So that was really... oh my god!
00:21:49: That was horrible because with the emotional change that comes with hormonal changes and this new phase in life it's just like it was horrible.
00:22:00: Yeah I can imagine And you know now i'm saying that postpartum you lose hair because hair was stuck in hair follicle restricting anagen.
00:22:09: but what is not?
00:22:11: often said is that it's a whole change in lifestyle as well, because you don't sleep so much anymore.
00:22:18: You are probably stressed because you just got a child or an infant and then you don' t know how to take care of it?
00:22:24: Because its big achievement right?
00:22:28: And that has an impact also on hormones.
00:22:31: It does!
00:22:33: I kept going like did they really send me home with this newborn?
00:22:36: Yeah
00:22:37: see Do they
00:22:37: know that I don't nothing about this?
00:22:39: Yeah, I have never done.
00:22:42: This is okay.
00:22:43: yeah sure i'm allowed to leave with this baby That I just gave birth too but I Don't know anything About it.
00:22:49: so yeah It's a very stressful.
00:22:51: yeah
00:22:51: exactly beautiful But stressful as well.
00:22:54: and I think As A woman you overthink.
00:22:56: Okay I can do that I Have To do that.
00:22:58: So You put more pressure on Yourself And the housing impact also.
00:23:04: okay gotcha.
00:23:05: and then something else happens in life as you grow older, as a woman where you experience another hormonal change.
00:23:13: And this is also something that you touched on.
00:23:15: It's this perimenopause when that hits and other shifts in hormones.
00:23:21: Yeah so menopause and perimenopus was quite interesting Is that nowadays there is a bit more interest about what he the cycle of menopause doing on skin and hair, which wasn't the case before.
00:23:37: So I'm quite happy with this advancement And it is true that nothing happens overnight.
00:23:43: so a lot changes are already happening.
00:23:46: peri-menopause That's five years before menopouse It has been shown for instance you would have a bit more sebum production but also start to experience hair thinning And there was this huge study done on three hundred and seventy-three, if I remember correctly woman which were in perimenopause.
00:24:08: Then another three hundred seven is something on women who are already in menopause stage?
00:24:13: The question was did you see any changes to your scalp or hair?
00:24:21: Fifty percent of the perimenopus woman said yes my hair is thinning so it's happening before.
00:24:29: But we don't realize it, because with accumulation of the... We only realized during menopause.
00:24:36: Gotcha!
00:24:36: Okay so in the process of losing that you really notice but then kind-of like when you do notice You have lost a lot of hair.
00:24:45: Yeah It's thinning and hair is shedding more And thats due to drops of hormones which would be done this case estrogen, estradiol and testosterone.
00:25:00: But that's also due to biological processes because aging is also there And when you age a lot of things are changing in terms of processes and then the hair follicle does not create the same fiber as before.
00:25:16: but You know what I think it's only fair usually the time when men also start seeing hair loss.
00:25:23: I was like, that's fair.
00:25:24: then for
00:25:25: once it
00:25:27: is fair.
00:25:28: you know we all go through the same thing more or less i must say.
00:25:32: but what are going to get into now?
00:25:36: What can We do about It right?
00:25:40: no To finish That off You mentioned Alopecia, you mention Alopeca Ariada and then there's also something called Traction
00:25:49: Alopec.
00:25:49: It
00:25:49: is also a thing but alopecia are?
00:25:52: we're not going to go into that because it like whole different topic right?
00:25:59: Exactly!
00:25:59: But
00:25:59: Traction alopeca can touch on this.
00:26:02: Yeah We definitely do it And you know how to be like hundred percent transparent here.
00:26:08: I've heard about it for the first time, three years ago when i was at a conference.
00:26:12: It was the multi-ethnic Conference of Hair For Hair and there...I met trichologists And we started to talk About alopecia and so on..and they were like hey Do you know this kind of alopecian?
00:26:26: No what is that?
00:26:28: Instructionalopecia as you mentioned That's the fact You start losing hair in front Because your putting too much stress & force on your hair while braiding, for instance.
00:26:40: And this kind of alopecia is often found into African communities whether it's like North African or South African but also in Brazilian communities actually because of the braiding and so on.
00:26:53: So this just pulling too much on their hair that you end up pulling
00:26:59: out?
00:27:00: Yeah
00:27:01: What does that do to follicle if happens over repeatedly?
00:27:06: I told you that a phase of growth should be six years, and also with ageing.
00:27:13: this whole process slows down.
00:27:16: And so there is sort of like number cycle to which the hair follicle can go on until it doesn't create hair anymore or so-to say.
00:27:26: While plucking your hair out from your hair follicles while braiding for instance You are accelerating this endpoint.
00:27:40: Because you only get a specific number of times that the hair will kind of like regrow, the follicle will regrow their hair?
00:27:48: Exactly!
00:27:49: So that's one thing.
00:27:50: and then the other could be because the hair follicles should be in an agent state for long period when it is not pulling out.
00:28:02: probably there some sort of inflammation you know, going on which would yield to the hair follicle becoming like shorter over time.
00:28:12: Which will then yield to miniaturization of it and probably no hair growth anymore.
00:28:16: Okay
00:28:17: so we've talked about that.
00:28:18: And now let's talk.
00:28:19: what can do with this?
00:28:23: because there is stuff right?
00:28:25: How could we regrow hair?
00:28:30: and is that actually a thing?
00:28:31: Are we really regrowing it, what are we doing.
00:28:34: Yeah so I think there we have to be like fair in saying if its stress related then they're kind of therapy for stress management for instance.
00:28:45: yeah If it's change in hormone level There also things out there you can use to rebalance the Omen level.
00:28:57: Right,
00:28:57: I think it's becoming more and more common for women to go on HRT like hormone replacement therapy or stuff like that.
00:29:06: yeah but what's quite interesting is that when you stop HRT um... You may see a lot of shedding happening.
00:29:13: Oh no!
00:29:13: As soon as you stop?
00:29:15: Yeah A few with a
00:29:16: delay
00:29:18: And this i didn't know..I was actually at a conference Like a trichologist conference These guys are really interesting And there was this trichologist and she had a patient who stopped hormone therapy treatment, then suddenly her hair shed.
00:29:33: I asked the trichology so what do you think is happening behind it?
00:29:39: She said probably the receptors like the antigen receptors are salarated which would be why your hair just sheds a lot when you stop.
00:29:52: Yeah.
00:29:54: Okay,
00:29:54: we win I'm like okay but the hormonal changes?
00:29:59: i was going to end this on a positive note.
00:30:01: no because there's things
00:30:01: that you can do.
00:30:02: yeah This is one thing for sure.
00:30:04: You would see hair growing
00:30:07: right?
00:30:07: Hundred percent
00:30:09: when your when you balance the hormones Right.
00:30:12: ok But this goes not only For like you know HRT but it also goes for stress levels Like cortisol level.
00:30:19: as soon As you bring those down the shedding will kind of
00:30:24: stop.
00:30:24: Exactly, yeah and I would say also it's really important to look at your diet because if there is one thing i think we didn't mention was that when you switch diet for instance then you go to keto fasting?
00:30:40: Then you may see after three or six months well you're gonna have a lot of hair shedding.
00:30:45: And the reason behind this though?
00:30:46: You don't so much glucose in your blood anymore And the hair follicle growth relies on glucose as well, and glycogen.
00:30:54: If it's not there is no able to function properly.
00:30:57: Okay
00:30:58: so glucose sounds like sugar?
00:31:01: Yeah
00:31:02: guys do not demonize sugar!
00:31:05: We need sugar?
00:31:06: Yeah, we need sugar.
00:31:07: Oh this podcast
00:31:08: is getting better!
00:31:09: You need sugar.
00:31:10: you need carbs as well.
00:31:11: I had this discussion with a friend this week
00:31:13: just saying
00:31:13: yeah carbs is bad and i was like we need to stop demonizing carbs because carbs if it's not found in processed foods its really good for the body.
00:31:23: please guys eat carbs but do a certain amount
00:31:28: okay.
00:31:28: so radical diet changes vitamin deficiencies.
00:31:34: Yeah, good point of vitamin deficiency.
00:31:37: so you remember when we talked about seasonal hair loss?
00:31:41: That also has to do with that because if we go out of the summer then you have decreased in Vitamin D and Vitamin G has an impact on the center for growth.
00:31:53: Vitamins are really important.
00:31:55: Vitamin B-twelves as well, to not forget about that.
00:31:58: Nutrients are very important and make sure you also have nice protein intake which would support your hair to regrow.
00:32:06: And there is a study published last year, end of the year I think it was menopausal women experiencing telogen effluvium which is hair shedding.
00:32:19: They go into nutrient and supplements.
00:32:23: And it turned out that a lot of these women were able to see their hair re-growing, so nutrition vitamin are really important.
00:32:33: because okay can I need to ask about this?
00:32:36: Because when you look at hair supplements right most will give you the biotin, they'll like for hair and nails.
00:32:46: Right?
00:32:47: So can you just tell me what does Biotin really do for hair?
00:32:51: Yeah so seeing why we also go in the lab, biotine is basically boosting yourselves okay making them able to better work so-to say And if their better works produce more energy If it's produced then you can produce more hair broken down, right?
00:33:12: But this is how I would explain it.
00:33:14: So i think biotin is also really important and we do have that in like product in the market exactly
00:33:21: because whenever you sell something to people who are hair related It has some sort of biotin in it.
00:33:30: But what you're saying is vitamin D and vitamin B,
00:33:33: yeah?
00:33:33: And your protein intake as well... Yeah!
00:33:35: Okay there it is.
00:33:36: Protein again.
00:33:37: Proteins.
00:33:37: Just wait for it.
00:33:38: And sugars guys.
00:33:39: And sugars, and sugars okay.
00:33:41: so this when comes to diet like you know that's where you can take in or eat put into the body To change your hair grow, right?
00:33:55: Or the hair growth.
00:33:57: Let's put it this way.
00:33:58: or to support your body in your hair
00:34:01: regrowth.
00:34:02: Yeah exactly
00:34:03: yeah face.
00:34:04: But let's talk about products though because there are so many products and So many topical products as well that you can put on your hair And I think the one that most people are familiar with is probably minoxidil.
00:34:17: Yeah.
00:34:18: Oh, what's the face?
00:34:21: Because I think minoxidil is a drug.
00:34:24: so we are then far from to my foamy.
00:34:28: yeah okay um So we are more into pharma kind of side but now it also you know in normal shop You can find because you
00:34:35: cannot buy over-the-counter for really cheap at this point
00:34:39: Exactly!
00:34:41: Minoxidile is working full some people And it's usually when you have like androgenic alopecia that is working.
00:34:50: What he does, is to kind of like weeden the blood vessels... Blood vessels are really important for bringing again the nutrient into their hair follicle For bringing sugar, vitamins etc.
00:35:03: That then supports follicular stimulation Then hair growth.
00:35:08: Okay so this how works?
00:35:10: Gotcha So its not necessarily.
00:35:18: I don't know if this is gonna sound stupid, right?
00:35:19: It's not making your follicle bigger or it's just increasing the blood
00:35:28: flow
00:35:29: towards your follicles which then makes it work more efficiently.
00:35:34: Exactly but you have to get on point with your diet and also...
00:35:38: Also okay so why are you skeptical when it comes to minoxidil?
00:35:42: because i feel like Yeah.
00:35:45: You know when we talked about women?
00:35:47: And then I said, yeah there is no direct paper showing that androgenautestosterone.
00:35:56: it's hundred percent.
00:35:57: the reason why... There is hair loss.
00:36:01: So when you look at minoxidil they are people who were responding and people who are not responding to it.
00:36:09: That would mean that It's not only testosterone or blood supply, or nutrient supply.
00:36:18: That there is something else happening and that could be hormone imbalance as we spoke about.
00:36:27: Yeah So yeah but you also have this finasteride which then actually directly Prevent these testosterone to be broken down into GHT And then they're used also see it at.
00:36:42: Some would not respond and some are women.
00:36:45: Okay,
00:36:45: wait so walk back because you just mentioned GHT or DHT?
00:36:51: So the testosterone is broken down into dehydrotestosterone which is that you remember.
00:36:57: Okay DHT right?
00:36:59: Yeah
00:36:59: okay when monoxidil doesn't work for you it could also
00:37:07: be
00:37:08: due to hormone imbalances, right?
00:37:12: Then you have to go and look at that again.
00:37:14: And then you could try finasteride.
00:37:21: if the trigger is directly... distussion and being broken down into DHT.
00:37:26: Okay, got it!
00:37:27: So one is for that.
00:37:28: then Minoxidil is to improve the blood flow and just stimulate this center of growth?
00:37:33: And
00:37:33: do you take... I mean, minoxidils can be taken topically
00:37:38: or you
00:37:39: could take it orally but i think a bit complicated because just grow hair everywhere.
00:37:45: Yeah, that's one of the side effects.
00:37:47: yeah I mean side effect.
00:37:49: so how he grows everywhere where you want
00:37:52: because this is a thing.
00:37:53: i mean if you're spending hundreds and thousands of euros on laser hair removal You might wanna rethink taking minoxidil orally Because then your like oh you could burn your money.
00:38:11: Expectation management, also really important.
00:38:15: You might be one of those people that where this doesn't work for you?
00:38:19: Mm-hmm.
00:38:20: So I mean when we talk about expectation management i would say um you know you should not expect results For instance in a month or something.
00:38:31: Consistency yeah
00:38:33: okay and if hair grows back then it's going to take probably three months until you see because three centimeters Yeah grow out, and then finally probably you would see it in after six months.
00:38:45: Probably will be able to really see the mass becoming a bit bigger.
00:38:49: so... Yeah.
00:38:52: Okay, gotcha and then also Leila.
00:38:54: I mean we don't have any time to talk about this because there's so many We haven't even gotten into like PRP therapy?
00:39:00: We haven' t gotten in to red light therapy.
00:39:02: No Like you know what Because i've been thinking of getting one Of those helmets.
00:39:05: but anyway So that just means You Have To Come Back To Talk To Us Again.
00:39:09: I Have Too And I'll Be So Happy To Go Deeper Into That.
00:39:13: Thank you so much, Leila.
